1. Don't nitpick
Buyers shouldn't settle, but if you haggle over ultimately insignificant factors, the seller may just choose to find a buyer who's not so difficult to work with.
2. Keep an open mind
Don't dismiss properties that aren't "perfect" without checking them out. You might be surprised.
3. Drag your feet
Sometimes you have to move quickly, and real estate agents advise against dithering about buying decisions, which could put you in a bidding war with other prospective buyers.
4. Make lowball offers
Everybody wants to get a good deal, but if you undercut the asking price too much, you could insult the seller. SmartAsset suggests imagining if you were the seller: Would you accept your offer? If not, make some changes.
5. File your paperwork promptly
If you're dragging your feet on more than just deciding which house you'd like to make an offer on, it may cause undue hassles for the seller or complicate deadlines.
If you and your agent see eye to eye, it will be easier to avoid butting heads, SmartAsset says.
